Thumb out, heart racing, and eyes scanning for a friendly driver—this was the unofficial transit method of the Boomer teen. With most families relying on a single car, and public transport often sparse, hitchhiking became the norm rather than the exception.

Teens heading to school, summer jobs, or concerts would stand roadside, hopeful for a lift. Strangers offered rides without hesitation, and kids hopped in with equal trust. Warnings were few, horror stories rare, and the sense of danger nearly nonexistent.
