#15: Finding Solace in the American Southwest
Crossing into the United States felt like surfacing for air. After years of physical extremes and cultural dislocation, the wide roads of Texas and the quiet deserts of Arizona gave Karl a rare stretch of peace. He walked past diners, gas stations, and motels that looked like scenes from films he’d grown up watching.
