When Exotic Pets Turn on Owners

In 2020, a man in India was found dead in his bed—silent, stiff, and with a pair of tiny fang marks on his arm. Investigators soon discovered he’d been bitten by his pet cobra, which he had allegedly purchased on the black market.

Even more disturbing: the man had used the snake to try and kill his wife weeks earlier. The cobra succeeded the second time—killing him instead. Authorities arrested an accomplice and dubbed it “the perfect murder gone wrong, with a venomous twist.”
